<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mrsbrownart.com/artwork/fractionfish_800.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.mrsbrownart.com/artwork/fractionfish_800.jpg" height="268" width="400" /></a></div>
My team mates and I were looking for a fun way to introduce and practice creating fractions, when one colleague came across fraction fish on <a href="http://www.mrsbrownart.com/3rd.htm">3rd Grade Art with Mrs. Brown</a>. This looked exactly like what we had been looking for. A creative way to use fraction circles to create sea creatures in an engaging and meaningful way.<br />
<br />
Mrs. Brown has a powerpoint that she has created that you can download for <a href="http://www.mrsbrownart.com/3rd.htm">FREE </a>on her site.<br />
<br />
She includes pictures that give some examples of what the sea creatures would like like. She also gives directions for how to make them. We are lucky because we have an Ellison Die Cut Machine still in our school. I was able to cut out about 120 circles in about 20 minutes after school one day. If you have a parent volunteer and you have a the time to plan it out, I recommend you get some help.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKG41WN9Ie2gekmGi7xpd6sOGPnrbvJOYtPaJWG61qd7Eyo9nyEtqVnr4xDbxN19ErpQV0W1ivK3ClY6NnHNZZtwxbCsj4R3wjFf_QZNOcBwN8KvY8ANuL5coK4zN-VWwM8U2q0hd44i0/s1600/fish+fraction.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="484" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKG41WN9Ie2gekmGi7xpd6sOGPnrbvJOYtPaJWG61qd7Eyo9nyEtqVnr4xDbxN19ErpQV0W1ivK3ClY6NnHNZZtwxbCsj4R3wjFf_QZNOcBwN8KvY8ANuL5coK4zN-VWwM8U2q0hd44i0/s1600/fish+fraction.PNG" width="640" /></a></div>
Some advice....make sure that you do "follow the directions" that she has outlined for you. If you have a group of kids who struggle with following directions, I recommend that you cut them together. In other words, I would have them each choose a color and cut the circles in 1/2 at the same time. Then do another circle, at the same time. <br />
<br />
I also had the children label each fractional part after they cut them out and added details to the blue background.<br />
<br />
Here is what my kids did:<br />

There are a million websites and apps galore that our children are exposed to everyday! Research is showing that our 21st Century learners need time to explore GOOD websites - where they can practice, extend and create new products. One really good source of organized videos is <a href="http://interactivesites.weebly.com/index.html">Interactivesites.</a> This site has a lot of great websites categorized for you. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh8bO21Ua7iYHqhZnqYgUHNabI1MlIJvchokyEqE6mD8DW7utpJzTo3nNWU53KxBmt-35tc79xc6BlSxk3x4NIYJL8_bHDC858PXgjT_bzzoFx94UIfFwWtZwvIoMfcoH-njHG4eccnCo/s1600/Captureinteractive+sites.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="231" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh8bO21Ua7iYHqhZnqYgUHNabI1MlIJvchokyEqE6mD8DW7utpJzTo3nNWU53KxBmt-35tc79xc6BlSxk3x4NIYJL8_bHDC858PXgjT_bzzoFx94UIfFwWtZwvIoMfcoH-njHG4eccnCo/s320/Captureinteractive+sites.PNG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Butsometimes I want to pick and choose what sites I want my students to use. How do you manage that? I use <a href="http://www.portaportal.com/">www.portaportal.com</a> .<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKZsVfJHj3MYurI-5CkNMHqMMX3Y_xrjzaxxPGsLld6pzp7C33n0cllzK2wdlAnTW_Fg7qQ6BCpoy9k71Uj90m-6R5JcY9hzsKvZ_uN6Rnnea6Z6-3PeKbaCEg3QRxJ2kexIdw-wd3hjw/s1600/capture+pp.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="178" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKZsVfJHj3MYurI-5CkNMHqMMX3Y_xrjzaxxPGsLld6pzp7C33n0cllzK2wdlAnTW_Fg7qQ6BCpoy9k71Uj90m-6R5JcY9hzsKvZ_uN6Rnnea6Z6-3PeKbaCEg3QRxJ2kexIdw-wd3hjw/s400/capture+pp.PNG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This is a FREE site that you can sign up for to use from home or school or anywhere you can access the internet. You will have a Member login which allows you to edit the websites into categories that make it easier to assign your students practice work. They have a separate login under Guest Access (so they can't mess up our system!)<br />
<br />
Once they log on they will see your categories and be able to choose websites that you have found underneath. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKZavnFZw8U6bW_O9RZiK9NKVxiw6k1CG5Q6BulCzodm-FVEn9QEggAH-qq1vB4rK9skAHdMcV0yU53ohN2Mjaobatg5ZqQAPAX_AaqDx4DXITeJkTLZUbuQV_zRJKuDmQ62peKsM6EvA/s1600/Capturepp.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="205" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKZavnFZw8U6bW_O9RZiK9NKVxiw6k1CG5Q6BulCzodm-FVEn9QEggAH-qq1vB4rK9skAHdMcV0yU53ohN2Mjaobatg5ZqQAPAX_AaqDx4DXITeJkTLZUbuQV_zRJKuDmQ62peKsM6EvA/s400/Capturepp.PNG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I like this because I can be as specific as I want to be...assigning sites under a topic like Ecosystem or Poetry or as vague as I want like Math. The website is always a work in progress and you can edit and change it as needed. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_DN7I9NgQ53uZdeiVykV15vMirEKqK9F_oXbQxvBTbBkVjWfPsIElh106JSBmL5M-Q5s_8xAmDKSRWC4eF-Vxiwv3Mv4aHhPDAKo3X7WXrFhvvIe0SuVQi8_jgRmzd5UB4TNLclWfFqc/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_DN7I9NgQ53uZdeiVykV15vMirEKqK9F_oXbQxvBTbBkVjWfPsIElh106JSBmL5M-Q5s_8xAmDKSRWC4eF-Vxiwv3Mv4aHhPDAKo3X7WXrFhvvIe0SuVQi8_jgRmzd5UB4TNLclWfFqc/s1600/photo.JPG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is a great way to make your learning experiences with computers meaningful - whether it is in the computer lab, using ibook carts in the classroom or even assigning it for homework . </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Kinesthetic learners need to move and groove....but they don't have to be disruptive. What are some ways to channel their energy into meaningful activities that will help them learn? I can tell you this...whole group is usually hard for them. Breaking up the day into short stints works well. <br />
<br />
My teaching colleague, Christina, (who is an expert in working with kinesthetic learners) shared with our team an amazing strategy....take the kids outside and read a readers theater. Genius! We took our whole grade level outside to practice our readers theater and the kids were engaged, happy and could be as loud as they wanted without driving me insane! (Readers theater practice with more than one group is very loud....)<br />

<b><span style="color: teal; font-size: 18pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Characteristics of Kinesthetic Learners<br />
<br />
Kinesthetic learners learn best by moving their bodies, activating their large
or small muscles as they learn. These are the "hands-on learners" or
the "doers" who actually concentrate better and learn more easily when
movement is involved. The following characteristics are often associated with
kinesthetic learners.<br />
<br />
1. Kinesthetic learners often wiggle, tap their feet, or move their legs when
they sit.<br />
<br />
2. Kinesthetic learners were often labeled "hyperactive" as children.<br />
<br />
3. Because they learn through movement, kinesthetic learners often do well as
performers: athletes, actors, or dancers.<br />
<br />
4. Kinesthetic learners work well with their hands. They may be good at
repairing work, sculpting, art, or working with various tools.<br />
<br />
5. Kinesthetic learners are often well coordinated and have a strong sense of
timing and body movement.</span></span></b></div>

<b><span style="color: teal; font-size: 18pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">I have a whole classroom of them this year...literally 20 out of 23 came out as kinesthetic learners on my learning styles inventory. </span></span></b></div>

In other words, I have 20 out of 23 students who are <span style="font-size: large;">kinesthetic learners.</span> They are sweet as all get out, but man do they move, wiggle, drum, bang and squirm. It's a good think I'm okay with this...just have to add a lot of movement into my already jam packed day. <br />
<br />
In the past, I have written warm-ups on the board and students have copied them into their math journals. This year my team decided to move to a more "study journal" for math reflections and note taking. So what should we do for warm ups now?<br />
<br />
Enter mini-white boards. Do you have these? I got some made a few years ago from showerboard at Lowes, but now you can pick these up almost anywhere - Target $1 spot, the dollar store, etc...<br />
<br />
<a href="https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ3nEN8qKg_CAs935uFz5rEj9JsDbqa58VbHu6pmobTUj3Tyts9lg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" class="rg_hi uh_hi" data-height="179" data-width="281" height="179" id="rg_hi" src="https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ3nEN8qKg_CAs935uFz5rEj9JsDbqa58VbHu6pmobTUj3Tyts9lg" style="height: 179px; width: 281px;" width="281" /></a>We start warm up by passing out a tissue to each child (to be our eraser) and then I write the<span style="font-size: large;"> target number</span> on the board. How many ways can you make equations that equal 425 using addition? <br />
<br />
Students will write the equation on their white board while I post an <a href="http://www.online-stopwatch.com/">online timer</a> to count down how much time they have to do it. <br />
<br />
Once they have written down a few equations, I have the students stand behind their chairs. When time is up, they need to find 4 people to share their equations with. (Hence the movement...kinesthetic learners need!) <br />

They drive me crazy too! Last year I found a system that actually worked. First when the kids bring in their supplies in the fall, instead of doing a community share system (where 4th graders see the supply as endless thus why take care of them????) I went to an <span style="font-size: large;">individual storage system.</span> <br />
<br />
The students will put there pencils in a plastic bag with their name labled on it. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfaXBy_JMlwb5oOaFDeo14jlIIcl3txAmOMfWEVldf9fRIsVgG_jyVvlLHXwhG-x-BVrZGDbZJMufpoNceAd54yiOv6XB80vEnXWVHSYeOfvuDh5r_yNc-BleO5QlvrsQ6kX0LOzCVxoc/s1600/2012-09-13+20.10.23.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfaXBy_JMlwb5oOaFDeo14jlIIcl3txAmOMfWEVldf9fRIsVgG_jyVvlLHXwhG-x-BVrZGDbZJMufpoNceAd54yiOv6XB80vEnXWVHSYeOfvuDh5r_yNc-BleO5QlvrsQ6kX0LOzCVxoc/s320/2012-09-13+20.10.23.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then I store these pencil bags in a crate right next to the pencil sharpener. It allows for the students to get a new pencil when they need it and sharpen it easily (in the morning before instruction starts). Also, if they run out -- then I can let their parents know (or grab from the extra supplies if it is a student in financial need). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Guess what? The kids took better care of them! And pencils lasted all year......</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Second tip comes from my team mate Christina. She found an awesome product on <a href="http://www.reallygoodstuff.com/product/self+adhesive+pencil+clips.do">Really Good Stuff.</a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.reallygoodstuff.com/images/set_a/en_us/local/products/thumb/159224.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.reallygoodstuff.com/images/set_a/en_us/local/products/thumb/159224.jpg" /></a><img border="0" src="http://www.reallygoodstuff.com/images/set_a/en_us/local/products/thumb/159224_a.jpg" /></div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It is a <span style="font-size: large;">pencil holder</span> for the top of their desks! My students this year are a little squirrely...they are constantly in motion and pencils are all over the place. This little baby is a life saver. The kids always have a pencil on their desk in place and not rolling all over the floor. </div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It is affordable - if you by 3 or more sets they are $3.99 for 12. So for $8 you can have a class set. They have an adhesive to stick to the desk for easy installation. </div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Do you have other ideas to keep you sane???</div>

Sorry I haven't been here for a while...but, I've been back to school! I have a lot of ideas in store to share and hope to be on here often over the next few weeks. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVKlRIX1symAWc0E4I-ufh3mIOFjHl7iyNuR1VipVA0CjoZUOzs09-8lXrY9DN8dQhK0wG6uAQsP7S3lEtB7DuiUVxZqB7gLgSMDnTuqiV6t6PArpfTV-QMQdozblkAO8DS7gOkCBwmOw/s1600/oct_4+003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVKlRIX1symAWc0E4I-ufh3mIOFjHl7iyNuR1VipVA0CjoZUOzs09-8lXrY9DN8dQhK0wG6uAQsP7S3lEtB7DuiUVxZqB7gLgSMDnTuqiV6t6PArpfTV-QMQdozblkAO8DS7gOkCBwmOw/s320/oct_4+003.JPG" width="320" /></a>I want to share with you something my wonderful team did this year. Every year our fourth graders play outside at recess at the same time. We have a HUGE play area. Let me show you a picture of half of the space....the kickball field....<br />
We also have to the right of this space a blacktop for basketball and then our huge playground area.(with 3 different play ground structures).<br />
<br />
<br />
Then we have a space on the side of the school where we also like to play soccer. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHGDu1NN5UBGyqRDDioKLeHia0d_0Towx5Sult3X-8Pje40O-gmR7t4JWQfuHlmRjwPtJDzwYDfSzkB5QT0_8Rp0ufSjn-6dAlB6gS9G69d84GCfK_5U2eihJaG5Nauzx_tv7xDxreUeI/s1600/oct_4+008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHGDu1NN5UBGyqRDDioKLeHia0d_0Towx5Sult3X-8Pje40O-gmR7t4JWQfuHlmRjwPtJDzwYDfSzkB5QT0_8Rp0ufSjn-6dAlB6gS9G69d84GCfK_5U2eihJaG5Nauzx_tv7xDxreUeI/s320/oct_4+008.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It's a LOT of space and there are only 4 of us to police it (monitor it). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This year we decided to introduce each area with a daily recess chat. We took all four of our classes into the cafeteria and went over our expectations. We wanted to stress that recess is supposed to be fun - not full of arguing! Fourth grade is an extremely competitive age and in the past we have spent more time fighting (arguing) than having fun. We wanted to change that. In addition to creating these anchor charts with our kids, we also positioned ourselves at specific locations to supervise and monitor what is going on. I have to say ....it has really worked smoothly! I have enjoyed watching the kids who choose to play soccer. They are having fun and know that bad sportsmanship is not acceptable and they will have to leave the game if they can not play fairly.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here are our anchor charts...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One for each day....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe-bFjUuhR25KNwuRJn2he_JcecMYlpq4AMumuunXEEZM-gc6TCa6e3E78ZzHOROF5jqhgL9V3HxKfEaaaIcUzjM7pJNRZwxHu8L6GxEzBJvv2st-0QLZhN6YyAM3oO-m4tKrQh9indMc/s1600/2012-09-13+20.09.10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe-bFjUuhR25KNwuRJn2he_JcecMYlpq4AMumuunXEEZM-gc6TCa6e3E78ZzHOROF5jqhgL9V3HxKfEaaaIcUzjM7pJNRZwxHu8L6GxEzBJvv2st-0QLZhN6YyAM3oO-m4tKrQh9indMc/s320/2012-09-13+20.09.10.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
During our recess talks, we asked the kids what it should look like on the <strong><span style="font-size: large;">equipment.</span></strong> We also stressed activities that are not allowed because they could be considered DANGEROUS...for example, pushing people off the zipline (#1 way we have broken arms at our school!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzjZoBXlEctA8XbqqkNnFp3Yhgd6l9Fh9dV243ddtb_XQyusPvlVfhBAgnVer2luNVGbUw9S0rAgbctNGbfaEDnrwO_SsH09I5_c5RGdRA5_S0gfDOS0oGlll9t_mMkTo4Gv1fOw1pEso/s1600/2012-09-13+20.09.38.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzjZoBXlEctA8XbqqkNnFp3Yhgd6l9Fh9dV243ddtb_XQyusPvlVfhBAgnVer2luNVGbUw9S0rAgbctNGbfaEDnrwO_SsH09I5_c5RGdRA5_S0gfDOS0oGlll9t_mMkTo4Gv1fOw1pEso/s320/2012-09-13+20.09.38.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOdQiuJRYL0tagT_WZChT4A7v4sVYLanAOpmY7XyfN1NHsby3oYdIu1tiKv0u3pXBHiGz_2QjGZeiOC5wVTzIPr34ZMS4JHbiINIEZca5FsuItgIHOnjH4ZLamZxExccbkVAtFd5ZcLZk/s1600/2012-09-13+20.09.16.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOdQiuJRYL0tagT_WZChT4A7v4sVYLanAOpmY7XyfN1NHsby3oYdIu1tiKv0u3pXBHiGz_2QjGZeiOC5wVTzIPr34ZMS4JHbiINIEZca5FsuItgIHOnjH4ZLamZxExccbkVAtFd5ZcLZk/s320/2012-09-13+20.09.16.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When we introduced<strong><span style="font-size: large;"> Soccer</span></strong> we also introduced where we play it and where the materials are. I have a basket that includes cones and pennies to wear as teams. Next up... the <strong><span style="font-size: large;">Black top</span></strong>. We decided that we needed two sets of rules...because it will look different when the blacktop is wet and when it is dry.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKGFFSb66bF3XtCLSEgQw8dQ11kS2MF11XyqYl6CKBiIhtGE-HVjRpFSsy7CzOPO8i4Yy6p5gHyK8YZMPd-0X5Oykgb1VietK5rWILu5Yf2T2O3u1CM56xbEKt4Y5TMbS9TbN4mW3tlkc/s1600/2012-09-13+20.09.20.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKGFFSb66bF3XtCLSEgQw8dQ11kS2MF11XyqYl6CKBiIhtGE-HVjRpFSsy7CzOPO8i4Yy6p5gHyK8YZMPd-0X5Oykgb1VietK5rWILu5Yf2T2O3u1CM56xbEKt4Y5TMbS9TbN4mW3tlkc/s320/2012-09-13+20.09.20.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And finally....<span style="font-size: large;">Kickball.</span> This is the game that can be so much fun, or so much trouble. If you have competitive kids (ummm...if you have kids at your school you have some competitive kids!) then you really have to monitor the game. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I am guest blogging today on Engaging Learners and sharing a recent blog that I posted over at my other blog, ScienceGal. It is about setting expectations for Cooperative Grouping in Science and I thought it was very valuable and I should share it here too! So enjoy the post today...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj66JTDbUMH4DCz6uz3eJlGVTS5vB_ynXVyscmEzgvUDgOmHzXDdAKPRF_UOjDaZ7PtU-yfSfRIojlcSPzDThWBN95lEW4XzvbFDkMOqrnxLMaqA2_87l2zsG_PfTmGXAgBvqKv3mjKkLE/s1600/8693F0FBB3A9925AACBD527D27A3F25A.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj66JTDbUMH4DCz6uz3eJlGVTS5vB_ynXVyscmEzgvUDgOmHzXDdAKPRF_UOjDaZ7PtU-yfSfRIojlcSPzDThWBN95lEW4XzvbFDkMOqrnxLMaqA2_87l2zsG_PfTmGXAgBvqKv3mjKkLE/s1600/8693F0FBB3A9925AACBD527D27A3F25A.png" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I know...I know...you have heard me say this a million times. It is important to have groups in science and to have individual jobs while you are working together! <br />
<br />
So how do you introduce it the first time????<br />
<br />
We begin by Introducing our science groups. Each group has 4 people in it (as best as possible - because I have 22 students I do have two groups with 5 in them). <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7pQD9L0hqzmWH9WufL_138Vgm_IEVtJfrxPl2xzLHRFdMjDq4fX0cbLIyc-Imh__z9TmdkPuZfZDgS-tZzGf_vX8BuvXsRmRuGMzgc2AkKykPtO7abeh4R3RO1NJadf2lfupfHCwipPw/s1600/Capturesciencegroup.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7pQD9L0hqzmWH9WufL_138Vgm_IEVtJfrxPl2xzLHRFdMjDq4fX0cbLIyc-Imh__z9TmdkPuZfZDgS-tZzGf_vX8BuvXsRmRuGMzgc2AkKykPtO7abeh4R3RO1NJadf2lfupfHCwipPw/s320/Capturesciencegroup.PNG" width="299" /></a></div>
<br />
Each child is assigned a color as you see. Then I have a chart that shows the jobs. I can easily rotate the tiles daily to switch jobs. <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS5-CxWwlEItdria71fPXQdmxxP6IyP02K29wVmvedjEzLv1qX1NjFhvABIwg4K_6U0LEhqSHzk6I8KwQ4M-XRSWRP07Vp9JUVitOMEHWlGaMXj6AISdit9HULYanWR233ZWVtD2B92OA/s1600/IMAG1122.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS5-CxWwlEItdria71fPXQdmxxP6IyP02K29wVmvedjEzLv1qX1NjFhvABIwg4K_6U0LEhqSHzk6I8KwQ4M-XRSWRP07Vp9JUVitOMEHWlGaMXj6AISdit9HULYanWR233ZWVtD2B92OA/s320/IMAG1122.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
We began working as groups by setting expectations. If you are going to work as a group on a task, what do you need to do in order to be successful? And what do the jobs mean?<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihQpVaTecYtehLYnaH_oQPRBNlXWo3EoWj0QO2A9KYwmONXDh1qVU87izqh2ZRVhZdNK381ryBGjO61SJsebngOJxzJp_X5JTjExXnGEMzlwZ2H681LhC_FjJFKnzkCRCJu5-6zs1bEs0/s1600/IMAG1129.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihQpVaTecYtehLYnaH_oQPRBNlXWo3EoWj0QO2A9KYwmONXDh1qVU87izqh2ZRVhZdNK381ryBGjO61SJsebngOJxzJp_X5JTjExXnGEMzlwZ2H681LhC_FjJFKnzkCRCJu5-6zs1bEs0/s320/IMAG1129.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Then we worked on two simple tasks. The first was to work as a team to build a house of cards. <br />
The next was to work as a team to solve a cup challenge. I love this second challenge! It is one I learned from FOSS several years ago and truly involves team work. You will need 6 solo cups,1 rubber band and 4 strings (cut about 24 inches) for <strong>each</strong> team. To prep for the activity you will need to tie the string to the rubber band in four spots...like this...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgtQN95m9JH-MbED5RM0nkU8LRAET_GrkW6MS9rqj8ZRNiV0mDh6W3_tT5hEM_dYTWq7MYSCK3G_FNb2xUqd6sKmbFiZMbluUDI9YmTMoKDz6V20A-0mIxw3-RgymgAArtXGxxPzkLqRk/s1600/Capturetool.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgtQN95m9JH-MbED5RM0nkU8LRAET_GrkW6MS9rqj8ZRNiV0mDh6W3_tT5hEM_dYTWq7MYSCK3G_FNb2xUqd6sKmbFiZMbluUDI9YmTMoKDz6V20A-0mIxw3-RgymgAArtXGxxPzkLqRk/s320/Capturetool.PNG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Why? It becomes your cup challenge tool. Each person will hold on to one piece of the string and working together will manipulate the rubber band to grasp and move a solo cup. Intrigued????</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Get your students into their groups of four and send your <strong>Getter 1</strong> to the materials spot to get 6 solo cups and one rubber band tool. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Students will need to make a structure that looks like this: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtErz6urxG_BV2QSdXgOa7z5GT_B1piEAC0Nyi2b_S3UEhAoQmEsHBm3mvisZCiKAGow_h0OzVryCpB-8uosIpm9Q8ODBSAqokZLrLvAIcpF4hNRk6evZ4-8bk549WKrTJVbr47e5cYQU/s1600/IMAG1127.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtErz6urxG_BV2QSdXgOa7z5GT_B1piEAC0Nyi2b_S3UEhAoQmEsHBm3mvisZCiKAGow_h0OzVryCpB-8uosIpm9Q8ODBSAqokZLrLvAIcpF4hNRk6evZ4-8bk549WKrTJVbr47e5cYQU/s320/IMAG1127.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Have your <strong>Starter</strong> create this structure. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then as a team, they will need to move the cups from this structure to a pyramid with three cups on bottom, then two cups then one on top. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdqRdKQRHQyJEoUc7CBpYrCfT0YUhdb2_POxER0O3AwnyQxJe6l-2FPm7BQ3R9ts4bOuaHU97sqTiUl-napuet5dNDuceSHJ5-QmHqxIZ5PhECOJi7h_MTb__PlARoQDEitUfXfNWXGsA/s1600/IMAG1126.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdqRdKQRHQyJEoUc7CBpYrCfT0YUhdb2_POxER0O3AwnyQxJe6l-2FPm7BQ3R9ts4bOuaHU97sqTiUl-napuet5dNDuceSHJ5-QmHqxIZ5PhECOJi7h_MTb__PlARoQDEitUfXfNWXGsA/s320/IMAG1126.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These guys are showing you how to manipulate the tool and you can also see the finished product at the side.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When you are finished, have <strong>Getter 2</strong> clean up the materials and return them to the materials spot. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And then, once everyone has returned to their seats, the <strong>Reporter</strong> from each group will share out what they did in their group that day (or in the future read their notebook entry.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
What do you think???</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Are you looking for some good read alouds for the beginning of the year? We are introducing Main Idea this week in our Mini Lessons as well as the metacognition skill of Asking Questions. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My teammates and I decided it would be a good idea to choose a theme and read five books that were linked to a theme so that we can compare them to each other. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I chose Cinderellla books. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="140" id="il_fi" src="http://planetesme.com/amazon/dinorella.gif" style="padding-bottom: 8px; padding-right: 8px; padding-top: 8px;" width="173" /></div>

The OTHER end of the Reading Ropehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11705575925561449916noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-844345009640239511.post-4392267414869361572012-09-06T04:11:00.002-07:002012-09-06T04:11:39.056-07:00Bathroom and Snack Routines<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
Over the summer, I spent every day stalking the <a href="http://clutterfreeclassroom.blogspot.com/2012/07/managing-bathroom-trips-teacher-tip-8.html">ClutterFree Classroom blog.</a> She has so many amazing ideas and tips that I just couldn't wait to see what she would post next...and many of her ideas were FREE for that day only! I, too, like to offer FREEBIES and have included one at the bottom of the blog today.<br />
<br />
One idea that I loved was this one for managing the bathroom...<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCgLrV1GKhMPgMmVNBPDL3nwYEPR6XmJRVpu9Bmxu0TS-paZwdoKwqdDy20Nwl53fPS0JYtvSxquEtwTywb9FDISmzcQ_VfyngN8TGBUL5s8lCmWortYNEWI7HcElZpOUp0nxiu1-r8sE/s1600/bathroom+cards+CFClassroom-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" closure_uid_o33266="2" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCgLrV1GKhMPgMmVNBPDL3nwYEPR6XmJRVpu9Bmxu0TS-paZwdoKwqdDy20Nwl53fPS0JYtvSxquEtwTywb9FDISmzcQ_VfyngN8TGBUL5s8lCmWortYNEWI7HcElZpOUp0nxiu1-r8sE/s1600/bathroom+cards+CFClassroom-1.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
It is a great, simple idea for allowing students to slip out during independent work time to go to the bathroom with out interrupting the teacher AND still knowing who is gone. <br />
<br />
I modified it a bit....and developed some guidelines.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg34p4dWG_r_H-pf5MWvepHyCFIJG44HfOptZWcCmOsrxiM9yoyjcfcCpZFoSLOgUQyCWV53YIDH8TP0EYea3Yj7j6kpph9pruQ98fax-kdXuGkLFBxj1WqB5wIf60edYKaXr4QFGIn5tQ/s1600/Capturebathrrom.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg34p4dWG_r_H-pf5MWvepHyCFIJG44HfOptZWcCmOsrxiM9yoyjcfcCpZFoSLOgUQyCWV53YIDH8TP0EYea3Yj7j6kpph9pruQ98fax-kdXuGkLFBxj1WqB5wIf60edYKaXr4QFGIn5tQ/s320/Capturebathrrom.PNG" width="234" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
First, she suggested copying the student numbers in two colors - one for girls and one for boys. I was fine with just using one color so I skipped that step. Second, I had found some cute circle number cut outs from the teacher store and laminated those instead. </div>
<br />
I used the front of my filing cabinet as my landing space. It is front and center in the classroom where I can see it from my small group area and it is magnetic. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjY2rNw4sdm9KojC9vVVZLjGIx_0N87-OCu4IXm8urQWokzOmLkRPT8m4q-2aSa8qIKKToQXZVDXXVvY36_zOpOAsKo7jiMVsnyzIUkwPWlWjp56LJbyJ-1QVx5C2m0YooDVmh2PsC1KG8/s1600/IMAG1109.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjY2rNw4sdm9KojC9vVVZLjGIx_0N87-OCu4IXm8urQWokzOmLkRPT8m4q-2aSa8qIKKToQXZVDXXVvY36_zOpOAsKo7jiMVsnyzIUkwPWlWjp56LJbyJ-1QVx5C2m0YooDVmh2PsC1KG8/s320/IMAG1109.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When they need to go to the bathroom, they simply move their number over to the slot that says Girls or Boys. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The rest of the numbers are on the side of the cabinet.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTevdZNwoCdHIhivMeCWNkowf8H-bT17WhRVtw-iXt_7eTtib8QJX2qtUCxtKvhcKtyydQyJ66qc7hsyrtLAozg2LcJrbO99ieAx4EZhzmokIByAtZjWZ9_NMDAJ_NmhooEuui_XT_7FQ/s1600/IMAG1110.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTevdZNwoCdHIhivMeCWNkowf8H-bT17WhRVtw-iXt_7eTtib8QJX2qtUCxtKvhcKtyydQyJ66qc7hsyrtLAozg2LcJrbO99ieAx4EZhzmokIByAtZjWZ9_NMDAJ_NmhooEuui_XT_7FQ/s320/IMAG1110.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also implemented a Snack Policy...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Being a mother of a fourth grade boy I know that they are HUNGRY all the TIME!!! Last year, I implemented the "eat when you are hungry" policy. I love it, because I do not have to stop what I am doing to allow a 15 minute break for snack. Instead, they eat when they want...while they work. Kids love it and so do I!</div>

Well, I'm officially back at work. This work week was a whirl wind of meetings, setting up my room, writing names...names...names..., planning with my team, back to school night, meeting the kids and the parents, visiting with old students, and prepping for the first week... Phew, I am exhausted and it hasn't even started! It is a good exhausted, though...you know what it feels like!<br />
<br />
I thought I would simply share some photo's of my classroom for those of you who may be curious.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhapkGGzsRoP3hFN1capC6_2FrgLH9uV9jJ7mK-IVFiFep4OmmrvclDV32-_iLVeI08nNCxtifmB_e6es0d2yoI2_rdJHiEBZCp0CcZ2nTKOTG261D3pM5o0fFPtrBgk6nRrmXtz9eBmF8/s1600/IMAG1098.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhapkGGzsRoP3hFN1capC6_2FrgLH9uV9jJ7mK-IVFiFep4OmmrvclDV32-_iLVeI08nNCxtifmB_e6es0d2yoI2_rdJHiEBZCp0CcZ2nTKOTG261D3pM5o0fFPtrBgk6nRrmXtz9eBmF8/s320/IMAG1098.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Class door sets the tone...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
This is my classroom library and meeting area. This year I have three area rugs for my students to sit on so they won't be on the tile. I have my seat crates there, my question of the day, my smartboard, my schedule and small whiteboard, my rocking chair and cute space curtains! My desk is next to this area (no photo).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq3r7Fd8k-B-GA1hABVJH8qTjYoG-8F4zIXo18TcfA3fv9bVTQ6M_4rMxY_qTIS0WU5LHVimO7_BGEimm_1eN1bD1Rtnsx7xm4WW4t_VY3DZdLQ13kcwwCjVUUEs3xa1b-Sma_3gvbXao/s1600/IMAG1094.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq3r7Fd8k-B-GA1hABVJH8qTjYoG-8F4zIXo18TcfA3fv9bVTQ6M_4rMxY_qTIS0WU5LHVimO7_BGEimm_1eN1bD1Rtnsx7xm4WW4t_VY3DZdLQ13kcwwCjVUUEs3xa1b-Sma_3gvbXao/s320/IMAG1094.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Continuing along this wall is my Va. Studies bulletin board and clipboard collection spot. I also have a writing area where I will post anchor charts (thanks ClutterFreeClassroom!) and materials spot. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next you can see the small group area as well as bulletin board where I will keep reading anchor charts. There is also a student computer and poster cabinet where I keep cubbies on top of it. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Along the back wall are my cabinets. That is where I store my stuff! I also have a spot for the kids to sign in for lunch, get nurse notes and bandaids, post pocket charts with science words and sentence starters and homework. And of course, there is my turtle! </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I have been inspired like the rest of you to create many goodies this summer. This was the last and final project....<span style="font-size: x-large;">Seat Crates!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
First of all...it is not as easy as it looks. And it is not cheap...unless you are like me and find good deals! We were lucky and had left over wood hanging around the house...so we used it! (no $)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLcdcuI7WIpSGwEvzGo44eL27oFsMCCWb6iaHXI743AG9JtHGNTdehd0XqZNk4SYheRBRPdx8WN8xO6jvFdbeLFQqs9rZw3HF_VGccz1yliNXupHfD5sEua1ysLdEHGx1LJWZrNOJ5Vno/s1600/IMAG1085.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLcdcuI7WIpSGwEvzGo44eL27oFsMCCWb6iaHXI743AG9JtHGNTdehd0XqZNk4SYheRBRPdx8WN8xO6jvFdbeLFQqs9rZw3HF_VGccz1yliNXupHfD5sEua1ysLdEHGx1LJWZrNOJ5Vno/s320/IMAG1085.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also had bought the crates last year so no $ this year (but about $12). Also, I wanted to find a cheaper alternative to the seat cushions. I found a stack of <strike>ugly </strike>cushions that were not my style on sale - 4 for $5. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglQ2pJFeyzdpTWqJusSin6BxI420eh_8AIay2lKVKhmuhyphenhyphenboE8m24v3UJR-cg0fGAQspsC1tO6xD03ICDeUdON9gdj-8T1u0VfKCWqtOFwSVFsYC4D2nep3E1KuoezNcAzel2P2auoMvw/s1600/IMAG1087.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglQ2pJFeyzdpTWqJusSin6BxI420eh_8AIay2lKVKhmuhyphenhyphenboE8m24v3UJR-cg0fGAQspsC1tO6xD03ICDeUdON9gdj-8T1u0VfKCWqtOFwSVFsYC4D2nep3E1KuoezNcAzel2P2auoMvw/s320/IMAG1087.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then I found cute fabric for $5 a yard (and only used a yard!). Goes well with my color scheme (primary colors) and my theme (Space and Robots).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9KKpVMKWg8zUsFZH3nzfRGCtmC0yMCXjk8VFU3wCaat9VQFiQzctX0JOi2Jt8DY1L3ieg4x2R-_gHEVuXgoIUl8ywnyhUe8XmGnNWrJw_vMD_NVknMF19zTlW-zcSwFf_zh0ZuvOi2zE/s1600/IMAG1088.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9KKpVMKWg8zUsFZH3nzfRGCtmC0yMCXjk8VFU3wCaat9VQFiQzctX0JOi2Jt8DY1L3ieg4x2R-_gHEVuXgoIUl8ywnyhUe8XmGnNWrJw_vMD_NVknMF19zTlW-zcSwFf_zh0ZuvOi2zE/s320/IMAG1088.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also had cute ribbon hanging around which would have been another $5 for two. So, imagine it will cost you between $30 and $40 for four crates...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEER-LlX4o3_qObka6aLuQi6rSHNC0dpC_wbsGwnv9qSA5Aw4amXttEOAUtQlWWFTD0gnmwRTZa84q62bb3gCOExZJgbTs9XZhJcs5nMDDMhDtSaoakiyOXGJRV3J9fMZVGXnv8uwwNYE/s1600/IMAG1086.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEER-LlX4o3_qObka6aLuQi6rSHNC0dpC_wbsGwnv9qSA5Aw4amXttEOAUtQlWWFTD0gnmwRTZa84q62bb3gCOExZJgbTs9XZhJcs5nMDDMhDtSaoakiyOXGJRV3J9fMZVGXnv8uwwNYE/s320/IMAG1086.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Time to make = an hour or less. I was lucky to have help from my husband with the cutting of the wood but I know other people had them do it at Lowes for them. Just make sure you measure each crate. They may be different sizes inside if you bought them at different times. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Anyway...they are adorable and I love them. I hope they last the year!!! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When we teach expectations, it is so important to clarify what we are looking for. Let me share a story from my son's middle school....He was often told to be organized with his work, but never told how to do that. So....how could he be expected to organize without support? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Fast forward to high school where they said he would have to have time management skills. This program actually spent orientation teaching him how to manage his time by making a schedule, breaking down tasks to 2 hours a night and then actually practicing it with "pretend" assignments. Wow...what a difference. Now, he is prepared, confident and ready to go. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">This is part of a "no secret" classroom!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is an example of an anchor chart that we created to show what using time wisely looks like. We broke the expectation down into meaningful tasks that actually make sense to them. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Do you tell your students what you expect in a clear, concise and easy to follow way? <br />
<br />
During the first six weeks, we work on creating class rules, individual goals and understanding routines and procedures. With this in mind, I also create my own expectations that I post in the room. They are simple, but effective. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoAbaienFFDE6IgB_Is_pmJz4OmJg5jGvx_bqNgJjy2-XOWxemmFaDYkG4-qt7awhLnTrqztX21BDhKT-rx_SGaDz1mLPWPrfK_AQd3WkUJ6otG9K7QmRvjnQl52hVmB-7EyQBkPmyKac/s1600/expectations.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoAbaienFFDE6IgB_Is_pmJz4OmJg5jGvx_bqNgJjy2-XOWxemmFaDYkG4-qt7awhLnTrqztX21BDhKT-rx_SGaDz1mLPWPrfK_AQd3WkUJ6otG9K7QmRvjnQl52hVmB-7EyQBkPmyKac/s320/expectations.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
How do we do this? Well...we take each strand and talk about what it looks like, sounds like and feels like. Most importantly....we practice it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
How? Morning Meetings are a great place to model what it looks like to be a good listener during share time. I model what it looks like to be polite to my students and correct them right away when I hear them talking rudely to each other. Work hard - well, that is where I showcase EFFORT right away. When I see a student working hard or trying their best, I may have them....kiss their brain!</div>

I copied this idea from <a href="http://www.langstonslearners.blogspot.com/">www.langstonslearners.blogspot.com</a> . I, too, have a jar of Hershey's kisses that the students can get a treat from when they work hard. </div>

However, word on the street is our new principal may not like us giving out candy...so I may have to switch to Smart Beads. </div>

Recently I completed the Skillful Teacher training which focussed on teaching children about the correlation between effort and achievment. <br />
<br />
I was amazed at this simple concept and thought about how it was relative in my life. How many of us know people,students, family members who are extremely smart...but just don't apply themselves and end up not meeting the potential they should in their adult lives? Then on the flip side, you know students who had to work hard each and every day ...and through their hard work and effort, they make great success.<br />
<br />
I recently ran into two former students. One was a gifted student who never had to study or put forth much effort in anything. As he grew up and realized he had to study in his highschool classes...he gave up. A child I thought would definately go to college is now working retail with no idea what he wants to do with his future. Again, on the flip side...a student I had who struggled with reading in 1st grade and had many tutors and support learned that if she worked hard and studied she could make good grades. Now a sophmore in college...she dreams of being an engineer. <br />
<br />
This week I plan to share with you several resources for teaching your students to put forth their best effort in the classroom. <br />
<br />
Today, I am sharing Effort Based Expectations and Motivational posters for <a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0By_1Di6nSG4HWFdfX0c2dHVaTGM/edit">FREE.</a> <br />

<br />
There were many years when I spent hours and hours planning a cute display to show jobs for my students. I would buy or create something "cute" that took up a ton of space. <br />
<br />
That was then, this is now. NOW...I need more SPACE for ANCHOR charts. So, a couple of years ago I decided to simplify. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAtIeQyxAJoldV_bKTfN-F_z0Os3T89jyKr4enzEK38QMzhHUFoLMAvDVniL7vVSEVfEyv1JtZ8TTr_80d-ssihMOKXqKvbeZppkbRGQqYjawSNhzmnf-DVOEpiFjdafAFw-Qt8icVYdU/s1600/IMAG1072.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" mda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAtIeQyxAJoldV_bKTfN-F_z0Os3T89jyKr4enzEK38QMzhHUFoLMAvDVniL7vVSEVfEyv1JtZ8TTr_80d-ssihMOKXqKvbeZppkbRGQqYjawSNhzmnf-DVOEpiFjdafAFw-Qt8icVYdU/s320/IMAG1072.jpg" width="240" /></a>Let me back it up a bit...first of all, I believe that <strong>ALL students should have a job.</strong> Everyone needs to have a sense of purpose in the classroom and giving them jobs gives them specific responsibilities. I also try to make sure that the jobs are truly jobs that need to be done in the classroom - not made up time fillers. For example, at our school it is a RULE that someone needs to <strong>check the teacher mailboxes at 3:15</strong>...so that is an assigned job. Similarly, we all need people to wipe the tables at lunch and help with recycling. Someone should walk the <strong>lunch count</strong> to the cafeteria in the morning and another person can walk the <strong>attendance</strong> to the office. We need people to <strong>sweep</strong> the floor and people to hold the dust pan. We also have a job to <strong>write the date</strong>, to change the <strong>schedule</strong>, to write the question of the day, and to<strong> calibrate</strong> the smart board. <br />
<br />
See???? That's a lot of jobs!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqZoPZ9-3knKo4-gPjTbtB_y9o3aG4_vU2mtWVJDvTgrlXpBDfDrb5jY-VZRULaumR4IISmgKPxavjP-T1pAxuXCmVW2HxYXPYUoE52VALrHIM-pc-M1kkSq616E-aJDWe6gO7oSZDj3s/s1600/IMAG1073.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" mda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqZoPZ9-3knKo4-gPjTbtB_y9o3aG4_vU2mtWVJDvTgrlXpBDfDrb5jY-VZRULaumR4IISmgKPxavjP-T1pAxuXCmVW2HxYXPYUoE52VALrHIM-pc-M1kkSq616E-aJDWe6gO7oSZDj3s/s320/IMAG1073.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqZoPZ9-3knKo4-gPjTbtB_y9o3aG4_vU2mtWVJDvTgrlXpBDfDrb5jY-VZRULaumR4IISmgKPxavjP-T1pAxuXCmVW2HxYXPYUoE52VALrHIM-pc-M1kkSq616E-aJDWe6gO7oSZDj3s/s1600/IMAG1073.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqZoPZ9-3knKo4-gPjTbtB_y9o3aG4_vU2mtWVJDvTgrlXpBDfDrb5jY-VZRULaumR4IISmgKPxavjP-T1pAxuXCmVW2HxYXPYUoE52VALrHIM-pc-M1kkSq616E-aJDWe6gO7oSZDj3s/s1600/IMAG1073.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><br />
I</a>Another idea I heard from someone (I don't even know who now!!) is to have a <strong>substitute </strong>position. So if someone is absent, you already have a backup plan to take over for them that day. If I run out of jobs (which is unusual) I have a job that says "<strong>Vacation</strong>"...which means that they have the week off. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<strong><span style="font-size: x-large;">How do I manage this?</span></strong> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Simple...I put the jobs on labels and then create cards (in another color) with labels that have the students names or numbers. Every Monday I rotate jobs - simply move the cards down a slot. It's easy! You can even assign the job to a student you trust!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
What do I use? I use a pocket chart and duct tape it to the wall...simple, yet efficient!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I love this book. I really do! This book is a great resource from Responsive Classroom and helps you (the teacher) include your students in creating rules in your classroom. <br />
<br />
Every year, we spend the first six weeks of school establishing routines and expectations. This book helps you guide your students as you create the rules together and make an anchor chart to post for the year. <br />
<br />
Of course, there are many parts to rules including how to follow them...what it should look like, sound like and feel like. <br />

One of the features include working in cooperative groups to fine tune your work. I have created a sheet for groups to record their thinking. You can download it <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fww5FvNpmp68eHHFKMCHw_aiLp_uX7WzBDishRg7D_s/edit">here for free!</a></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Have you seen these on Pinterest? I love this idea that was posted on <a href="http://confessionsofateachingjunkie.blogspot.com/2012/07/made-it-monday.html">Confessions of a Teaching Junkie.</a> These bags are meant to be tied to the back of a student chair and are perfect for holding chapter books! It has two pockets and can hold several thin books. I love this idea because last year I had a bunch of hard core readers and they always had books stacked up on their desks. I was looking for a solution...and this is what I decided to try.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://media-cache0.pinterest.com/upload/281615782919614029_GIQpvc5y_c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Pinned Image" border="0" id="pinCloseupImage" src="http://media-cache0.pinterest.com/upload/281615782919614029_GIQpvc5y_c.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I wanted to copy the idea and so I went to Home Depot and bought these simple nail bags for 88 cents each!</div>

I love her really cute name tags, but got to thinking....I will have to change those every year, when I get a new student, etc..So, I decided to change it up to a more generic idea and created numbers to cover the logo. </div>

I had picked up these simple conversation bubbles for $1 at Walmart. I cut off the bottom of the speech bubble to make it fit on the nail pouch. I made the numbers in a fancy font (20 of them!) and placed them on the speech bubble. Cover it up with clear packing tape and it is sturdy and ready to go.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I fastened it to the pocket and used double sided tape rather than Velcro. It was cheaper and I hope it lasts! </div>

<a href="http://media-cache-ec4.pinterest.com/upload/287597126174570984_5GKmipxJ_c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="Pinned Image" border="0" id="pinCloseupImage" src="http://media-cache-ec4.pinterest.com/upload/287597126174570984_5GKmipxJ_c.jpg" /></a>I love <img class="rg_i" height="53" name="OqPRMLCENB5uCM:" src="https://encrypted-tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQeclvl6IkPoXqOuJeZ0oAF5JqH_w_pCCLRXj9rzWTjkgxy0aQggBTE5Gk" width="211" />....I mean, I love to store ideas on this site...and occasionally, I get around to actually making these ideas...Today is such a day.... <br />
<br />
I (like many of you) was intrigued by the idea of these posts... of an objective board like this one by <a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/82753711873283798/">Fourth Grade Frolics.</a><br />
I like the colorful background and ease of the dry erase markers to post my objectives for the day.<br />
<br />
On my hunt for these frames, I noticed that most of the frames were made of glass. Glass in my classroom = broken.<br />
<br />
So I continued my search and found a great solution... Using<br />
mini dry erase boards! I found a collection at my local Dollar Tree. I typed up the content area in a fun font, pasted them on a colored background and taped them onto the boards. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibIw6RUiNM32Cm6pmBer7qFnCpPNfVZtlH2CWPyZzFPKE6WUuwARKuIPPw00K7Ubk3CvUVmJue4Lr94aMCA2WXBA3ou8vu5cerPQPchAWDWBKRddGP2lEBNJb9WU9UaS0-Uh7uGz8vEuQ/s1600/2012-07-31+03.49.16.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibIw6RUiNM32Cm6pmBer7qFnCpPNfVZtlH2CWPyZzFPKE6WUuwARKuIPPw00K7Ubk3CvUVmJue4Lr94aMCA2WXBA3ou8vu5cerPQPchAWDWBKRddGP2lEBNJb9WU9UaS0-Uh7uGz8vEuQ/s320/2012-07-31+03.49.16.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
This is what an individual board would look like...and this is what it would look like with the objectives written on to it...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyHKndp3mS0mLYJYionf7KrADp3UHOR9m5FNoAfOJxSAgKtzpWRKrHrwVvGfPLQXzyoFcGETaGuzi8YgSr5Lp-VitUZh-2_4KHDKivnT4lHL8yVekNRi20T80XWj54PJrQAK5pivbMwMM/s1600/2012-07-31+03.50.29.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyHKndp3mS0mLYJYionf7KrADp3UHOR9m5FNoAfOJxSAgKtzpWRKrHrwVvGfPLQXzyoFcGETaGuzi8YgSr5Lp-VitUZh-2_4KHDKivnT4lHL8yVekNRi20T80XWj54PJrQAK5pivbMwMM/s320/2012-07-31+03.50.29.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I liked these because the back of the boards already came with magnet strips. The place where I would be hanging these are on an old chalkboard. This would be perfect!</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next, I needed to make a heading...so I did choose ONE glass frame. </div>

Put it all together...and it looks like this!<br />

<a href="http://www.responsiveclassroom.org/product/interactive-modeling">Responsive Classroom</a> has a few new books out including one on Interactive Modeling (formerly called Guided Discovery). This is an important teaching tool ALL year, but is especially crucial in the first six weeks of school. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://encrypted-tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRKIaQfKt_JVdT1C5-txhVytbPh6objEnvUYZcJHzjaSUm3Tfif" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" class="rg_hi uh_hi" data-height="156" data-width="177" height="156" id="rg_hi" src="https://encrypted-tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRKIaQfKt_JVdT1C5-txhVytbPh6objEnvUYZcJHzjaSUm3Tfif" style="height: 156px; width: 177px;" width="177" /></a>So what does it mean? It is the approach you use to teach your expectations. When I was a child we were told the teachers expectations - one time! It was usually really fast and expected that we knew exactly what she meant, right??? Our kids have changed (or maybe we just understand them better) and now in order for your class to truly run smoothly you need to not only share expectations but also model expectations. We know to do that in Kindergarten...but do we still do it in the upper grades? <br />
<br />
As I blogged in an earlier post about teaching routines for art supplies, we also need to teach these procedures for math manipulatives as well. <br />
<br />
Several years ago, my team brainstormed together a way to introduce expectations for using math manipulatives. One of the things that my primary teaching emphasized was the need to have time to "freely explore" materials before you expect them to use them as an educational tool. <br />
<br />
By fourth grade at our school our students have had years of experience of using math manipulatives as tools. However, there are always students new to the school who have had limited exposure with these tools. They need to learn how to use them as well as have time to play! (HINT: If you don't give them time to play, they will play when you are trying to teach....)<br />
<br />
<a href="http://dooverdecade.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/unifix-cubes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="282" id="il_fi" src="http://dooverdecade.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/unifix-cubes.jpg" style="padding-bottom: 8px; padding-right: 8px; padding-top: 8px;" width="376" /></a>We introduce our math materials on the second day of school. We pull out our tubs of pattern blocks, multi-links, dice, and unifix cubes. Each table group gets a tub and a piece of chart paper. We ask each table to spend about 15 minutes exploring with the materials. As they explore, we walk around and ask "What can you do with the materials?" "Tell me why you...."<br />
<br />
After 15 minutes we ask each table to become the experts of their math materials. They will use the chart to brainstorm a list of all the ways you can use the materials for math - counting, patterns, measuring, etc... The groups will then bring me the charts and we will go over the uses of each of the tools as a group. It is at this time that I make my own chart to show how I expect materials to be used and put away. <br />
<br />
<span style="color: blue;">1. Use the materials for math purposes and follow class directions.</span><br />
<span style="color: blue;">2. When you are finished, put the items back in the tubs and but them in the spot on the shelf where you got them.</span> <br />
<br />
(I would have pictures, but my math shelves are in the hallway at school right now as they are cleaning my classroom - we still have a month off!) <br />
<br />
Simple, direct and no secrets....One thing I have learned over the years is never assume that the kids know what to do...and they DO NOT learn it the first time!<br />
<br />
Hope this helps you this year!<br />

Sharing....<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
Every year, I want to get to know my students better...it's part of that critical relationship building that needs to happen in your classroom in order for your room to work as a classroom community. <br />
<br />
I always bring in something to show my kids a little bit about me first. A few years ago my family and I went to Boston and I brought in pictures and a bobble head to share with my students. That year I sent this note home and had them bring in one object a day. I sent it on a rotating basis - picking on name out of the star sticks randomly and gave them this ticket to communicate with the parents. <br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieUximI3xHDu-QVS8E7OK02au-Tz_7qT1L1oUGlqHFtcvKzUuM2KJ4kjTR_mxDXi2WTik9dlcli8aF5Pj0cjOB21I1h9y7kMqjl1lgC7Hdz9IegZtAednC3bU5PVG9n2DnOB_HxaseQwM/s1600/Capture+share.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="288" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieUximI3xHDu-QVS8E7OK02au-Tz_7qT1L1oUGlqHFtcvKzUuM2KJ4kjTR_mxDXi2WTik9dlcli8aF5Pj0cjOB21I1h9y7kMqjl1lgC7Hdz9IegZtAednC3bU5PVG9n2DnOB_HxaseQwM/s640/Capture+share.PNG" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Most years I send home a paper bag with instructions stapled to it. This is actually something we do school wide from Kinders to 5th grade! I still pick names randomly and give them the paper bags the day before so they won't forget. Expectations are critical for both students and parents. <br />
<br />
Again, I start with my bag. I decorate it and fill it with five objects that tell a little about me. <br />
<ol>
<a href="https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51M3%2BVzlB7L._SL500_SY160_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="To The Moon and Back" border="0" height="160" id="img_B005CKKFNK" src="https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51M3%2BVzlB7L._SL500_SY160_.jpg" style="margin-top: 0px;" width="105" /></a>
<li>I always have a book that I am currently reading (NOT 50 Shades! ha ha) </li>
<li>I put a small magnifying glass in the bag...because I am known for loving science!</li>
<li>I put a dog toy for my puppy Peyton. </li>
<li>I include a shell from my love of the Rivah (We have a house near the Chesapeake Bay)</li>
<li>Last but not least is a picture of my grandmother, Mimi, who was a teacher and who inspired me to go into teaching in the first place!</li>
</ol>

Have you ever noticed that there are always a million things to do after school? Have you, like me, watched enviously as some teachers walk out the door when the last kid does...while you still face a million things to do to be ready for the next day? It's all about being prepared...the time you put in before the day starts, they better your classroom will run and the more your students will learn!<br />
<br />
Several years ago I started this after-school daily jobs list...and it has helped me to get items completed quickly and with help from my students. This teaches responsibility! <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
At the end of the day, I have my late bus students look over the list. Each child picks a job that they can help with at the end of the day to help me get on track for tomorrow. </div>

What ever they don't help me with, I can easily see what I need to do to be PREPARED...</div>
